ECT* EUROPEAN CENTRE FOR THEORETICAL STUDIES IN NUCLEAR PHYSICS AND RELATED AREAS Trento, Italy GENERAL INFORMATION September 15, 1994 (Subject to change; in particular train schedule will change depending on change from summertime to solar time) LOCATION OF THE CENTRE The postal address of the Centre is: ECT*, Villa Tambosi, Strada delle Tabarelle 286, 38050 Villazzano (TN); the site is known to locals as "Villa Tambosi", and lies nearby the "passaggio a livello di Villazzano", the railroad crossing at Villazzano (Square T-4 on the map). Telephone and Fax numbers are: +39-461-314730 (tel.), +39-461-935007 (fax). Trento is situated in the Adige valley, about 90 km north of Verona and 140 km south of the Brenner Pass. It is easily accesible by air, rail and road. TRAVEL INFORMATION Air The nearest airports - in order of proximity - are Verona (90 km), Venice (153 km) and Milan (213 km). In order of importance, Milan, Venice, Verona. Milan: Two international airports ("Linate" for European flights, "La Malpensa" overseas). Bus service to Milano Centrale railway station (about 25 min. from Linate and 1 hr 15 min. from La Malpensa). From there trains to Verona-Trento. Some trains are direct; if not, change in Verona (timetable Appendix 2). N.B. We strongly recommend that, in order to avoid lines at the railway station, visitors continuing to Trento by rail purchase their tickets at the railway-ticket offices in the airport upon arrival. Venice: Has international flights. Bus service to railway station in Mestre, and trains from there to Trento via Verona; alternatively, the direct Valsugana line to Trento (see below). Verona: There are daily flights to and from Paris and Frankfurt, as well as several flights to Rome and other major Italian cities (Verona-Milano Linate: departure daily 07.10 - arrival 07.45). There are also three daily British Airways flights to and from London (Gatwick). Bus service or Taxi (about Lit. 25.000) to Verona railway station. From there trains to Trento (60 minutes). Overseas travellers should consider the opportunity of flying via London. Below is a list of international flights from Verona. This line crosses the Milan-Venice line in Verona (Milan-Trento and Venice-Trento ca. 3 hours). There is also the scenic Valsugana line direct Trento to Venice (3 hours). Those trains stop in Villazzano, 200 m from the ECT*. Road Trento is on the motorway connecting Munich-Innsbruck-Verona-Modena (A 22). Coming to the ECT* Centre located at the "Villa Tambosi" in Villazzano, proceed as follows: Exit "Trento centro" (Square M-9 on the map). Look for signs to "Vicenza" and follow them for about 3 km . The road goes uphill (via Vicenza which turns into via Asiago). There is a junction after the first railway crossing, where you will see the "Villa Tambosi" in front of you (Square T-4 on the map). Go stright in "via Galassa" and then immediately turn left onto a narrow road going uphill ("Strada delle Tabarelle"). The entrance to the "Villa" and ECT* is the first gate to your left. The Centre is located in an annex behind the "Villa". Coming to the "Faculty of Science" in Povo, proceed as follows: Take exit "Trento centro" (Square M-9 on the map), follow signs to "Padova" for about 7 km. The road crosses the railway line and then goes up the hill. After the first tunnel turn left and then immediately right towards S. Dona. Continue for a short distance downhill to a junction. Continue downhill for 200 m and look for the sign to "Povo". Turn left onto a narrow bridge. You are on the road going up to Povo. After about 1 km, turn left at the first intersection into via Sommarive. The Faculty of Science is to your right (Square O-2 on the map). Coming and going between Villa Tambosi and the Faculty of Science: The two localities are less than 2 km apart, and directly connected by a road that passes through Villazzano and Povo (via A. Tambosi, which runs straight into via Castel di Pietrapiana, which runs directly into via Sommarive). Coming to the hotels: Some hotels are downtown within walking distance of the railway station; others are near the Faculty of Science. Arriving by car via motorway, take the exit "Trento centro" (Square M-9 on the map) and proceed to the downtown area. Connections betweens the railway station, the Faculty of Science and ECT* are described below under "Local Transportation". Parking areas: The ECT* has its own large parking area. In downtown Trento you may bring your car into the central "restricted traffic area" for loading/unloading your baggage. Parking is possible out of this central area in the blue zones, free of charge 7 p.m.-8.30. a.m., 12.30 a.m.-3 p.m, on sundays and holidays. Large free-charge parking areas are in the proximity of the cathedral ("Piazzale Sanseverino"), and nearby the motorway exit (shuttle bus connection to the train station). REGISTRATION When they first register, at the ECT* Secretariat, visitors must o provide a photocopy of the pages of personal data in the passport o complete an information sheet stating their name, date and place of birth, and permanent home address SUBSCRIPTION FEE The Board of Directors of the ECT* has decided to institute a "Subscription Fee" for workshop participants of Lit. 50,000 (approximately $ 30.00) per person. LIBRARY AND COMPUTER FACILITIES The ECT* has a small in-house library. A very well-furnished library and other infrastructures (photocopying, terminals.) are also available at the Faculty of Science. Guests of the Centre will enjoy the same rights and be subject to the same regulations at the Faculty of Science as the permanent staff of the Dept. of Physics. The ECT* has 2 SparcStation 10/512 (Unix) workstations, with the Internet addresses "ECTstar.ect.unitn.it" and "nuclear.ect.unitn.it"; 3 smaller SparcClassic (Unix) workstations with the Internet addresses "ortles.ect.unitn.it", "brenta.ect.unitn.it" and "cimon.ect.unitn.it"; 3 486 PCs under MS-DOS that can be used as terminals; 3 MacIntosh PCs that can be used as terminals. Telnet connections can be made from all terminals (without accounts); instructions are on the terminals. More general information sheets are on the tables near the terminals. Normally, visitors will be given individual accounts (their surnames in lowercase) before the beginning of the workshop. These accounts will be deleted after the end of the workshop. Visitors will be able to do heavy computation on the workstations, and to communicate with their home nodes (Telnet) and/or to transfer files from/to their home nodes (ftp) on the terminals. Furthermore, the ECT* offers services such as text processing (Tex, LaTex), printing of files, and compiling/running of Fortran and C codes. Please contact W. Leidemann if you have any questions. LODGING Various arrangements are made for visitors according to the availability of rooms in the different hotels. Visitors who have been granted local subsistance support from the Centre will have their lodging expenses covered (shared accomodation in a double room, and breakfast) and billed directly to the Centre by the hotel, excluding other charges (telephone, bar, etc.). Supported visitors requiring single-room accomodations may be required to pay the extra cost. Accompanying persons pay their share of the cost directly to the hotel double rooms in a three star hotel range from 110.000 to 130,000 Lire/night). N.B. Hotel reservations made for visitors by the ECT* Secretariat are guaranteed. Visitors should notify the hotel and the Secretariat of any changes in their dates of arrival and departure. Possible charges deriving from either lack of compliance with the above requirement or late modifications in reservations must be covered by the visitors themselves. Visitors who wish to find their own housing solutions and who possess an Italian "Codice Fiscale" (Fiscal Code Number; see "Travel Support" for more information) will be provided with up to 35,000 Lire/day (including 20% tax) for their housing costs. FOOD Weekdays ECT* (buffet lunches). Free of charge for supported participants, who will sign the participant list at the restaurant. in the ancient villa beneath the Centre. Non-supported participants and other guests have to pay for their own meal (estimated cost Lit. 10,000). Ristorante La Baracca (dinners, 100 m across the street from the Centre). Free of charge for supported participants, who will sign the participant list at the restaurant. Non-supported participants and other guests may dine at "La Baracca" at a special price. University Restaurants (one is in the Faculty of Science, 11.45-2.15 p.m., the other downtown, 11.45-2.15 p.m. and 7-8.30 p.m.). Special meal tickets are needed and may be requested at the Secretariat. Supported participants eat free of charge with code-32 meal tickets. Non-supported people need a code-45 meal ticket and pay cash at the restaurant. Saturday Ristorante La Baracca. Supported visitors sign the participant list at the restaurant. Accompanying persons and other non supported people can eat on conditions agreed upon with the ECT* paying directly at the restaurant (Lit. 16,000 per meal). University Restaurant (12.00-1.30 p.m. and 7.00-8.15 p.m.), Via Santa Croce 67 in downtown Trento (Square P-6 on the map). Meal tickets required (see below). Hotel America, Via Torre Verde 52 (Square N-6 on the map). Meal tickets required for supported visitors (see below). Accompanying persons and other non supported people can eat here in agreement with the ECT* and paying directly to the restaurant (Lit. 22,000 per meal). Sunday University Restaurant (12.00-1.30 p.m. and 7.00-8.15 p.m.), Via Santa Croce 67 in downtown Trento (Square P-6 on the map). Meal tickets required (see below). N.B. Meal tickets for University Restaurants and for Hotel America may be requested at the ECT* Secretariat on Friday. Supported visitors arriving on a weekend will find some meal tickets in the personal folder waiting for them at the hotel. The University Restaurants will be closed August 12-15. Meal reimbursements (only on weekends) Meals on weekends at other restaurants in Trento and surroundings (in a radius of 30 km from Trento) may be reimbursed to participants by the ECT*. To this end, supported participants ask the restaurant for a receipt ("ricevuta fiscale") to "I.T.C./ECT*, Via Santa Croce 77, 38100 Trento". A group of supported visitors may ask for a collective receipt (one of them will sign the receipt, and make a list of the persons present), while non-supported participants and other guests have to ask for a separate receipt. The Centre will reimbuse supported visitors for such receipts as soon as possible during the workshop. In the meantime, they should be prepared to support themselves with a reasonable amount of Italian currency. N.B. The ECT* Secretariat will reimburse o up to a maximum of Lit. 40,000 per day and Lit. 30,000 per meal, o only meals on weekends. The cost of meals appearing on the receipts must therefore not exceed Lit. 30,000 per person. Special subsistence support Per diem may be given in exceptional cases (as visitors coming with family and lodging in apartments). In this case, visitors will be provided with a "Codice Fiscale" (Italian fiscal code number) and will be reimbursed up to Lit. 40,000/day (including 20% tax). TRAVEL SUPPORT Visitors should provide the Centre with a tentative travel budget as soon as possible based on inexpensive train (2nd class) and air fares. In some cases, the Centre may opt to "pre-pay" the visitors' ticket and visitors simply pick up their ticket at the airport. Visitors who cancel their visit or change their dates of travel after their ticket has been purchased, will be responsible for whatever "penalties" may be due. The ECT* Administration will not reimburse taxi fares incurred in foreign countries, and in Italy only indispensable taxi service will be reimbursed. Car travel to and from Trento will be reimbursed (when agreed) assuming a consumption of 0.1 litre of "super" petrol per km (at current italian prices). N.B. In order to avoid charges (bank transfers etc.), the Centre will reimburse travel expenses cash while visitors are at the ECT*. For administrative purposes however, visitors must send back the original used ticket stubs within 7 days of the end of the workshop. For the reimbursement to be legal, visitors will be given a "Codice Fiscale" (Italian fiscal code number), if not yet having one (the Secretariat will help). HEALTH INSURANCE-MEDICAL ASSISTANCE Everyone who visits the ECT* for any period of time, must have a proper medical insurance, either public or private. The ECT* has information about doctors who can be consulted by ECT* visitors. For further information please consult the ECT* Secretariat. Public Medical Insurance may be extended to cover visitors from the European Community and from Austria, Sweden or Brazil. They should ask their local health authorities about the procedure. Private Medical Insurance may be extended similarly. The ECT* has a special agreement with ELVIA Insurance Company providing limited medical insurance coverage to visitors during their stay in Italy. The ECT* is not responsible for accident/health insurance coverage of the visitors. LOCAL TRANSPORTATION City service Trento has a good public transportation network with 17 bus lines. All the buses stop in front of the Railway station (Square N-7 on the map) and leave every 15-30 minutes. The service starts between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., and finishes between 7.30 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. Timetables and itineraries are listed at the bus-stops. Tickets must be purchased at a tobacconist (newspaper shop) before boarding the bus (single ticket Lit. 1,000; a booklet of ten tickets Lit. 10,000). Bus to the ECT* (Villazzano): go by bus 6 or 13 and get off in Villazzano at "Villa Tambosi" (the Centre is located in the modern building behind the "Villa"). The bus stops at a railroad crossing. The entrance to the Centre is the first gate on your right, 50 m up "Via A. Tambosi" (square T-4 on the map). Bus to the Faculty of Science (Povo): The Faculty of Science and the Department of Physics of the University of Trento are in Povo, in Via Sommarive 14 (Square O-2 on the map, Pante). To get there, go by bus 5 or 13 and get off in Povo. The Faculty is less than 2 km from the ECT*. Regional service Trento's delightful surroundings can easily be reached by regional buses. The regional bus-station is 100 m from the Railway station, in Via Andrea Pozzo. Taxi There is a taxi service in front of the Railway station (Tel. 235383) or Radio-Taxi service (Tel. 986090). Cost: Lit. 12-15,000 from downtown Trento to the ECT*. Car Rental There are a couple car rental companies in Trento. Or you may rent a car directly at the airport. Prices are about Lit. 100-150,000 per day and about Lit. 500-700,000 per week (add 19% tax). Contracts must be guaranteed with a credit card or deposit. There is a 25 km paved trail for bicycling on the left bank of the Adige river, leading southward. Downtown Trento is also a good place for a pleasant ride. SPORTS ACTIVITIES There are tennis courts and a swimming pool within walking distance from the ECT*. Ski slopes are only a half-hour away. THE WEATHER IN TRENTO The winter is usually dry, but snow is not uncommon in the town and surroundings, and temperatures can easily fall below zero. Spring weather is often unstable, with considerable temperature excursions between night and day. The summer is usually dry and hot, with temperatures as high as 30 Celsius degrees.
